Bonfire Night can be an exciting experience for children. From wrapping up warm and heading out together to watching the night sky light up with colour, it's a wonderful opportunity to make memories as a family.
Alongside all the excitement, it's important to keep safety in mind too. Here are a few simple tips to help your family enjoy a safe and memorable Bonfire Night.
If you’re planning on watching fireworks, consider attending a professionally organised display. RoSPA says this is the safest place to enjoy fireworks, with displays carefully planned and managed by trained operators.
Wherever you celebrate, keep children well supervised and at a safe distance from fireworks and bonfires.
November evenings can be chilly, so layer up before heading outside. Hats, coats, gloves and sensible shoes can help keep little adventurers comfortable while they enjoy the display.
Gloves are particularly important if older children are using sparklers, as recommended by RoSPA guidance.
Sparklers might look magical, but they still need to be treated carefully.
RoSPA advises that sparklers should not be given to children under five. For older children using them, they should be closely supervised, wear gloves and hold the sparkler at arm's length. When it's finished burning, place the sparkler straight into a bucket of cold water.
For older children who are safely using sparklers, placing the sparkler securely into a large carrot can give them a little more distance from the burning end.
It's a useful extra precaution, but it doesn't replace the usual sparkler safety rules. Children should always be closely supervised, wear gloves and follow the safety guidance above.
Bonfire Night is also a lovely opportunity to help children understand why safety rules matter.
Simple reminders such as "we watch fireworks from a safe distance" or "only grown-ups handle fireworks" can help children enjoy all the excitement while staying safe.
Fireworks should always be handled by adults, and children should be supervised throughout the celebrations.
Whether you're heading to a local display or watching from a safe spot, we hope your family enjoys an evening full of colour, wonder and special moments together.
Happy Bonfire Night from everyone at Storal! ✨
